C-GCC Day Care Center Gets Early Literacy Grant

September 01, 2006

(Greenport NY)

The day care center at Columbia-Greene Community College has received  $5,000 from Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation to support an early childhood literacy project.

“We are grateful to the Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation for giving our children the opportunity to advance their reading and learning skills,” said Day Care Center Director Priscilla Tice. “It’s an exciting program for us all and we’re looking forward to getting it off the ground.”

The funds will be used to hire a part-time reading coordinator who will be dedicated to the project. The program is designed for three-to-five-year-olds, the overall age range of the students in the center.

Employing elements of the Public Library Association’s Early Literacy Project, the program will place emphasis on reading aloud.

“Research studies have shown that reading to young children promotes language acquisition and correlates with literacy development,” said Thomas Wright, director of research at C-GCC, who wrote the grant application for the college. “The percentage of young children read aloud to daily is one indicator of how well young children are prepared for school.”

The reading coordinator will compile a list of books and stories as well as a lesson plan designed to stimulate imaginative thinking and language skills for the pre-schoolers. The coordinator will also work to encourage parents to read aloud to their children at home.

Operated by the Columbia-Greene Community College Association, the C-GCC day care center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The licensed center enrolls children aged 3 to 5. Priorities are given to student parents, but the center also serves college faculty and staff as well as community members, subject to availability.
