The Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation funds critical Northeast Parent & Child Society initiatives that help Columbia County residents

Director Carl Florio joined the Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation’s Board of Directors in presenting Northeast Parent & Child Society with two grants totaling $160,000. This funding will support critical programs to help improve the lives of children and families in Columbia County.

“Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation is proud to support organizations like Northeast Parent & Child Society,” said Carl Florio.  “Northeast’s programs strengthen our community by serving the needs of children and teens.  We have supported Northeast’s fundraising efforts for at-risk families for many years and are pleased to extend our partnership with this donation.”

The Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation has pledged $150,000 payable through 2010 to Northeast Parent & Child Society’s “We Build Futures” Capital Campaign. Northeast’s new headquarters on Franklin Street in Schenectady helped the agency serve nearly 70 children and families from Columbia County last year through a variety of residential, education, foster care, family preservation, career development and administrative services located throughout the Capital Region.

“We Build Futures” is allowing Northeast to consolidate a variety of programs, including an outpatient children’s mental health clinic, family foster care program, and sexual abuse treatment center. In 2009 Northeast will begin to build a new, state-of-the-art career development center on the building’s first floor. No such facility currently exists in Schenectady County.

After the new Career Development Center opens in 2010, Northeast plans to begin building new career centers around the Capital Region, including one convenient for Columbia County residents.

To date, Northeast has raised nearly half of the funding required to complete the “We Build Futures” Capital Campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in June 2011.

“The Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation gave the first and largest corporate grant toward our capital campaign,” says Sari O’Connor, Executive Vice President of Community Relations at Northeast Parent & Child Society. In appreciation for the Foundation’s leadership, Northeast will name the second floor entryway to Child Guidance Center, Family Foster Care Program and Sexual Abuse Treatment Center in honor of the Foundation.

In 2006, the Foundation delivered another first in partnership with Northeast and the Columbia County Department of Social Services. Columbia County was the first in upstate New York to initiate Northeast’s Parent Enrichment and Intervention Program. The program is designed to help at-risk families reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. As a community service, and working in conjunction with county Departments of Social Services, Northeast provides this program free-of-charge to parents, foster parents, and other caregivers of severely at-risk youth.

Thanks to a third annual grant from The Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation, Northeast expects to double the number of Columbia County families served through this program during the next year from 18 to 36. The grant has helped Northeast hire one more full-time staff member. Now a Masters-level clinician and a bachelor’s-level clinician provide additional classes and in-home intervention for parents whose children are at risk of being removed from their home.

The New York State Office of Children and Family Services and Rheinstrom Hill Community Foundation have also funded the Parent Enrichment and Intervention Program.

“The Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. Foundation provides a fine example of the support that model public/private partnerships provide to children and families in need,” says Hector Ramirez, Executive Vice President of Programs and Services and Chief Operating Officer at Northeast Parent & Child Society. “Once again, the Foundation is strengthening the community in which they do business.”

For the past 120 years, Northeast Parent & Child Society has helped more than 100,000 struggling children and families from upstate New York build better futures. A nonprofit, child welfare agency, Northeast offers a wide array of residential, special education, family foster care, children’s mental health, family preservation, and career development programs.
